Finally, after much consideration, I’m calling an end to Hearts in Glorantha/Gloranthan Adventures as a publishing adventure.
Its been over ten years and a fantastic experience that I’ve learnt a lot from. It grew out of my earlier efforts with the Ring of HeroQuest Narrators ( a UK demo team and fan website), I wouldn’t have made the leap from web design to desktop publishing, publishing to a deadline, art direction, turning up to conventions with a box of stock, as well as dealing with a broader fan community.
I realised that despite my attempt to enter a third phase of the zine’s existence, my Heart is no longer in it, and with the success of the OpenQuest 3 Kickstarter and other ongoing and emerging game lines at D101 Games, I’ve not got any time for it.
I’d like to thank Jeff Richard at Chaosium/Moon Design for his advice and help in the early days. Special thanks to John Ossoway, John Hodgeson and Stuart Stansfield for the covers. To all the artists and authors who submitted work. I’ve been humbled by the passion that you all put into your work.
So long and thanks for all the Ducks 🙂
The Practical bits of this Announcement
1. If you are missing individual copies of HiG/GA, including the out of print issues 1-5, they will be available via the d101games web site until the end of October, in print/pdf.
2. At the end of this month, all D101 Gloranthan Fan publishing will stop. The books will become unavailable in any format, and this blog will be deleted.
HIG issue 8 cover by Dan Barker
My friend, and Gloranthan Tribe Minster, Dr Moose says that once you are a Gloranthafan, you can never really get away from Glorantha and that it eventually drags you back in when you try. Well, that is certainly the case here, and after a hiatus of only six months, I’ve decided to get back to work on Hearts in Glorantha and Gloranthan Adventures. Part of this is due to the rather strange times we are in giving me time and space to work on D101’s Gloranthan Fanzines alongside the other work that I’ve got on.
There will be some changes to how I put together HiG and GA.
First off, I won’t be doing an open call for submissions. The fanzine will be done more in-house, with me contacting writers/authors that I want to work on it. With the Jonstown Compendium up and going I feel that’s a better place for Gloranthan fans who have a quick, intense burning desire to get stuff out there quickly.
Second, with RuneQuest Glorantha well and truly out now, both zines will use that system as its default. It’s not to say that I won’t publish HeroQuest or 13th Age Glorantha. I’m currently more intrigued by the new edition of RuneQuest as well as it being something that I’m enormously familiar.
Finally, each issue of HiG will have a theme by default. Previous issues of HiG had themes that emerged as the submissions came in. Now that I’m doing it in-house so to speak, it helps to have a unifying theme to keep the team of contributors on track.
Finally, artists Peter Town and Dan Barker are drawing for the next issue of HiG #8. Here’s a preview of Dan’s front cover, which should give you a pretty good idea of this issue’s theme 🙂
A small one that will probably go unnoticed, but here we go:
I’ve updated the submissions guidelines, which now reflect the fact that I’m now accepting submissions for RQ Classic (aka RQ2), and when they are published the new RuneQuest and 13th Age Glorantha. So happy days!
Check it out
I’ve yet to do the call for submissions for Hearts in Glorantha issue 7, but will do once I’ve finalised HiG#6 (which I’m close to doing), but if you want to jump the gun, read the guidelines and contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org
Hello all Glorantha Fans!
The time has come to open the doors to the Hero Plane and invite strong Fan Authors and Artists, and other esteemed Contributors (such as proof readers), to come to the Sacred Place that is Hearts in Glorantha.
Oracles have been consulted and it is time to put the wheels in motion, summon up the spirits, call upon the essences and Heroform the Gods to create a new issue of Hearts in Glorantha.
If our efforts are mighty enough will be the beginning of a new Volume of this fearsome fanzine.
1. Go read the submissions guidelines

Ok….even though we are many days past Resurrection Day now, here’s the Good News about Hearts in Glorantha.
First off I’ve collected the first 5 issues into a Hearts in Glorantha Vol 1, issues 1-5 Collected. Coming in at 280 pages its a behemoth of a book that I’ve spent the good part of a year putting together. In addition to the old material cleaned up , and organised by subject (so all the Lunar stuff we published is in one block for example), there’s also 22 pages of new material about The Balkoth Tribe – a complete playable Sartarite Tribal Confederation by the esteemed Dr Moose. Here’s the cover by Jon Hodgson.
The overall aim of the collected edition is to gather up the significant chunk of fan output from the 2000s-mid 2010s in one place and make it easily available to people who’ve just found it, without them having to pay stupid collector’s prices in the future. The reason why it’s called Volume 1 is…..
…Hearts in Glorantha is coming back! Its been on hiatus the last couple of years while I’ve been doing other D101 Games projects as well as catching up with all the changes that The Guide to Glorantha brings to the table, but with the imminent publication of HeroQuest Glorantha, and 13th Age Glorantha and RuneQuest Adventures in Glorantha, I feel the time is right. After HiG Vol 1 Collected is out I’ll publish new submission guidelines for Vol 2 and talk about the new format of the ‘zine in more detail.
Finally Gloranthan Adventures #2 Red Sun Rising is going through its final checks and should be out in time for UK Games Expo at the end of May.
Also appearing in time for UK Games Expo in May is OpenQuest Adventures, a quick collection of 4 adventures including Tomb of the Empty Emperor that appeared in HiG#3 but isn’t going to in HiG Collected and an article by Simon Bray who regularly uses OQ to run his Gloranthan Games entiled “Gloranthan Runes for OpenQuest”, which covers how to use run Gloranthan Magic using OpenQuest.
Greetings fellow Gloranthans!
Welcome to the Hearts in Glorantha Death & Resurrection Show!
Today according to established ritual is Death’s day, and suddenly without any prior warning all issues of Hearts in Glorantha 1-5 are unavailable in any form whatso ever be it from my usual POD outlets or directly from me.
But fear not….for Sunday is Resurrection Day and I shall reveal news that will gladden your hearts 🙂
